HIST 346. BYZANTIUM AND ISLAM. A thematic overview of the pre-modern Byzantine and Islamic worlds, from their common roots in the Mediterranean world of Late Antiquity to the establishment of the Islamic Empires and Kingdoms of the Near East, Asia, and Africa. The course traces the transformation, flourishing, and decline of Byzantium concurrently with the rise of Islam to world dominance. Alternate years, spring semester only, three hours.
