Description
GOBL 305. FOUND & LOST IN TRANSLATION. A course designed to introduce students to the field of Translation Studies through the analysis of the use of subtitles, translations, and adaptations for films, television series, music, and literature. Students will learn how to read and consume translations through assigned texts and media, including those which pertain to the world of business, medicine, and politics, for example. The course will deal with ethical and political issues associated with who translates and interprets for whom, the consequences of not translating, and the stakes involved in translations deemed to be inadequate. Students will grapple with how translation, interpretation, and adaptation, broadly understood, contribute to their familiarity with other cultures. Offered periodically, three hours.
