Description

BIOL 335. BOTANICAL BATTLEFIELD: PLANT PATHOLOGY. A survey of plant pathogenic microorganisms and their mechanisms of survival, pathogenesis, and spread. Human society relies on the food, fiber, medicine and beauty that plants provide. Therefore, plant disease epidemics in agricultural systems to natural landscapes can cause devastating impacts on our society and economy. This course will focus on the biological and
environmental factors that drive plant diseases and the development of strategies to improve plant health and combat disease at the local and global scales. Students will learn about important plant pathogenic fungi, bacteria, viruses, phytoplasmas, and nematodes. Labs will focus on techniques used in diagnostics and plant-microbe interaction research. Grades will be based on student performance in a variety of activities including lecture participation,
labs, in-class activities, group projects, and exams. Prerequisite: Biology 102. Alternate years, fall semester, four
