BIBL 312. A SECULAR AGE. This course will study the issue of Christian belief in the 19th century looking particularly at reactions to the Enlightenment such as that offered by Mary Shelley, the criticism of the Christian faith by Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche, and the various defenses of the faith by Friedrich Schleiermacher, Soren Kierkegaard, Fyodor Dostoevski, Leo Tolstoy, John Henry Newman, and Herman Bavinck. The focus of the classes will be on expounding key texts in their historical contexts. Offered periodically, three hours.
