BIBL 211. HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY II. This course examines the history of the church from the immediate post-apostolic era to the end of the ‘long reformation’ of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Particular attention will be paid to the doctrinal disputes that shaped the church’s thinking and to the relationship between the church and wider society. Themes will include worship, persecution, Christendom, church-state relations, monasticism, medieval scholasticism, the papacy, the Reformation, and Puritanism. Alternate years, three hours.
