THEA 210. INTRODUCTION TO MUSICAL THEATRE. This class is a survey of the development of musical theatre as a performing art form in America from 1750 to the present. By looking at musical theatre from multiple perspectives - historical, cultural, political, social, aesthetic - the class will explore the ways in which musicals both reflect and embody values and trends of the cultural landscape in which they were written. Included will be practical study of the format of the libretto and musical score in relationship to the major musical theatre genre. Semester course, three hours.
