Description
HIST 231. MODERN LATIN AMERICAN HISTORY. The story of Latin America from the beginning of the colonial period to the present. The class explores the geography and history of those countries colonized by Spain and Portugal in the sixteenth century, which still preserve the influence of Iberian political and social principles today. It also examines the subsequent political, social, and economic development of Latin America, the complicated relationships between individual countries in this region, and the increasing relationships between the region as a whole and the rest of the world. Alternate years, fall semester only, three hours.
