GLOBAL FRANCE: HIST, LIT, AND FILM (GOBL 301)
Term: 2023-2024 January Intersession
Description
GOBL 301. GLOBAL FRANCE: HISTORY, LITERATURE, AND FILM. Today, French is spoken in over 29 countries. Additionally, France is home to significant sub-Saharan African and Maghrebi diasporas, and France has the largest Islamic population of Western Europe. Through literature (i.e. Mouloud Feraoun, The Poor Man’s Son; Gisèle Pineau, Exile: According to Julia), film (i.e. Days of Glory, The Battle of Algiers, La Haine, Timbuktu), and historical texts, this class will examine France from a transnational perspective, focusing on French presence abroad (from the lens of political, military, and economic interests), perspectives on that presence, and waves of immigration from former colonies to metropolitan France. We will also consider historical and contemporary debates about French laïcité (secularism) in relation to religious (Jewish, Islamic, Protestant, and Catholic) communities. Taught in English. Offered irregularly, three hours.
