ENGL 210. THE GOOD BOOKS TRADITION. This course explores the educative value of those texts classicist John Senior called the “Good Books,” i.e., poetry, fables, myths, mysteries, and adventure stories which imaginatively prepare students to receive the great ideas of the classics. This class studies the Good Books not only for their rich content, but also for their propaedeutic value as stepping-stones to the Tradition. Along the way, we will be discussing vital and relevant themes like the concept of leisure, the distinction between ratio and intellectus, and the doctrine of the Good. Alternate years, spring semester, three hours.
