CHEM 467. MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY. The author of the textbook states “The primary objective of medicinal chemistry is the design and discovery of new compounds that are suitable for use as drugs.” This course will examine how lead compounds are identified and optimized to maximize their therapeutic effect; and how once a potential drug is identified, it is formulated and administered to reach the target site in the body, its action at the target site and how it is metabolized. Modern methods in drug development and the process of getting a drug to market will also be addressed. Prerequisite: Chemistry 242. Alternate spring semesters, two hours.
